Microsoft has consolidated the marketing of Copilot under Jared Spataro and has unified its consumer and enterprise applications into a single one. In this context, Andrea Mallard, who joined in January as the marketing director for Microsoft AI, is expected to leave and will remain as an advisor until early next year, following an internal memo mentioning a family move to Europe in August.
Centralized Copilot Marketing and Unified Application
The marketing of Copilot is now led by Jared Spataro, with a formal consolidation of campaigns. Microsoft has also recently combined its Copilot applications for consumers and businesses into a single application. According to two people familiar with the matter, the company is rethinking its broader consumer marketing strategy and does not plan to directly replace the role of marketing director for Microsoft AI. These moves come after the consolidation in March of the Copilot commercial and consumer teams under a new executive and the role change of Mustafa Suleyman to a team dedicated to superintelligence.
Scheduled Departure of Andrea Mallard and Internal Timeline
An internal email announced Andrea Mallard's upcoming departure in a memo dated June 30. Yusuf Mehdi stated that she plans to move to Europe with her family in August to be closer to her ailing father, which would imply her exit from her position. Microsoft has confirmed these intentions and specified that she will continue to serve as an advisor until early next year. According to internal information, her departure is expected to occur gradually about six months after her appointment. In the same memo, Yusuf Mehdi praised her energy, consumer-centric approach, and contribution to a more unified strategy, including a single application experience.
Context: Mallard's Background and Ongoing Marketing Actions
Joining in January from Pinterest, Andrea Mallard spent over seven years as the CMO of that platform, after leading marketing at Athleta (Gap) and holding the same position at Omada Health. During her brief tenure, a Super Bowl advertisement showcased the use of Copilot in Excel for analyzing athletes' performances, and a collaboration with influencer Alix Earle generated video content using Copilot; however, these projects had been launched before her arrival. On LinkedIn in January, she expressed a desire to recruit talent committed to a humanistic AI and described AI as the most significant technological change of her life, adding, "We have a huge responsibility to get it right." Copilot remains Microsoft's flagship generative AI product.
