Microsoft Introduces Copilot's Agent Mode in Its Office Suite

Microsoft recently announced a significant advancement in the integration of artificial intelligence into its office tools. On April 22, the company revealed the global rollout of Agent Mode in its flagship applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. This update, initially presented in September 2025, allows Microsoft Copilot to execute complex sequences of actions within documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, all while remaining under the vigilant control of the user. This feature is now available by default for subscribers of the Microsoft 365 Copilot, Premium, Personal, and Family plans.

New Capabilities of Agent Mode in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Agent Mode significantly enhances the functionality of the Microsoft suite. In each application, Copilot offers an improved user interface with a sidebar detailing each operation performed. Microsoft's demonstrations show that the assistant can interact directly with the content or via a prompt bar, chaining multiple actions within the same file.

• Word: In this word processing software, Copilot is capable of drafting, rewriting, and restructuring documents while adapting the tone to the intended audience. It also provides suggestions to improve the content.

• Excel: The assistant excels at generating formulas, creating tables and visuals, and analyzing data directly within the workbook, thereby facilitating decision-making.

• PowerPoint: Copilot can create or update presentations from simple natural language instructions while adhering to the visual templates defined by the company.

Expanded Access to Agent Mode

Agent Mode is accessible to a broad user base. Subscribers to the Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium plans can fully benefit from it. Additionally, users of the Microsoft 365 Personal and Family plans also have access to these new features, thereby broadening the impact of this update.

A Major Evolution for Copilot

Since its initial integration into the office suite, Microsoft Copilot has evolved far beyond its role as a mere "passive partner." According to Sumit Chauhan, president of the Office Product Group at Microsoft, the early versions of Copilot were limited to answering questions without being able to act directly on documents. However, over the past year, AI models have made significant progress in terms of following instructions, reasoning, and overall quality. They can now handle multi-step modifications without deviating from the user's original intent.

This update has already led to a notable increase in user engagement, retention, and satisfaction. Microsoft does not intend to stop here and is currently working on even more advanced editing capabilities for complex workflows, such as financial spreadsheets and legal documents.
