Microsoft Introduces AI-Enhanced Surface Devices
Microsoft recently unveiled three new models in its Surface lineup: the Surface Laptop 8, the Surface Pro 12, and the 13-inch Surface Laptop. According to the company, these devices represent a new generation of Windows PCs thanks to the deep integration of artificial intelligence. The Redmond firm, which has previously attempted to position its Surface devices as pioneers of modern PCs, is now reinforcing the integration of AI. The Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 are equipped with the latest Intel chips and include AI features capable of operating directly on the device. While these innovations promise unprecedented performance, they also come with very high price tags.
A Strategic Shift Towards AI
After betting on ARM and Qualcomm's Snapdragon chips two years ago, Microsoft is changing course with its new models. The Surface Laptop 8 and Surface Pro 12 are now equipped with Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processors, primarily targeting professionals. The central argument remains AI, with neural processing units (NPUs) capable of reaching 50 TOPS. These specialized units allow for AI functions to be executed directly on the device, reducing reliance on the cloud and promoting local data processing. This paves the way for a multitude of intelligent features under Windows 11.
Visible and Invisible Innovations
The new Surface lineup mainly consists of the Surface Laptop 8, available in 13.8 and 15-inch versions, and the Surface Pro 12. While the exterior design evolves little, Microsoft bets on the timeless elegance of its devices. The innovations are mostly found inside. The Surface Laptop 8 introduces an advanced haptic touchpad that generates contextual vibrations based on actions performed in Windows 11. For example, a close button or object alignment can produce subtle tactile feedback.
Additionally, Microsoft has integrated a privacy filter on certain models, a feature designed to protect sensitive data from prying eyes in open workspaces or public transport. The OLED screen also makes its debut on some versions of the Surface Pro 12, while the 15-inch model of the Laptop 8 boasts a higher resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hz.
Prices Reflecting a Premium Positioning
Microsoft's new Surface models come with prices that may deter many potential buyers. The Surface Pro 12 starts at nearly $1,950, and the most advanced configurations, featuring a Core Ultra 7 processor, 64 GB of RAM, and 1 TB of storage, exceed $4,000. The Surface Laptop 8 can reach up to $4,500 depending on the configurations. At these price points, Microsoft is not only competing with Dell, HP, or Lenovo but is also targeting Apple's MacBook Pro.
However, the main interest may lie elsewhere. Microsoft appears to be preparing a new phase of its PC AI strategy, with consumer versions equipped with the upcoming Snapdragon X2 chips expected later this year. This initial wave of Surface devices could thus serve as a real-world test before a broader market offensive.
