Microsoft, Google, and Amazon Ensure Access to Anthropic Claude

Major tech companies Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have recently confirmed that their customers can continue to use the Anthropic Claude artificial intelligence model for non-military projects. This assurance comes as the U.S. Department of Defense has designated Anthropic as a supply chain risk, escalating the conflict with the startup.

Microsoft was the first to clarify that Anthropic's models will remain available to its customers, even as the Department of Defense has taken action against the startup. This official designation followed Anthropic's refusal to grant unlimited access to its technology for applications the company deemed dangerous, such as mass surveillance and autonomous weapons.

The supply chain risk designation is typically reserved for foreign adversaries. For Anthropic, this means that the Pentagon will not be able to use its products once Claude is removed from its systems. Furthermore, any company or agency working with the Pentagon must certify that it is not using Anthropic's models. In response, Anthropic has pledged to challenge this designation in court.

Microsoft, which sells a range of products from Office to its cloud to numerous federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, has assured that Anthropic's products, including Claude, will remain available through platforms such as M365, GitHub, and Microsoft's AI Foundry. A company spokesperson stated that this availability excludes the Department of Defense, but Microsoft can continue to work with Anthropic on non-defense-related projects.

Google, which provides cloud computing services, AI, and productivity tools to federal agencies, has also confirmed that Claude will remain accessible to its customers. A Google spokesperson stated that the Department of Defense's determination does not prevent them from collaborating with Anthropic on non-military projects, and that their products remain available via Google Cloud.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has echoed these statements. According to CNBC, AWS customers and partners can continue to use Claude for non-defense-related workloads, ensuring service continuity for civilian users.

Anthropic's CEO, Dario Amodei, responded by stating that this designation applies only to the use of Claude in direct contracts with the Department of Defense. He clarified that this does not affect other uses of Claude or business relationships with Anthropic, as long as they are not related to specific contracts with the Department of Defense.

Despite pressure from the Department of Defense, Claude's popularity continues to grow among consumers, as Anthropic has refused to yield to government demands.
