Microsoft Unveils MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, Its AI Dedicated to Cybersecurity
On July 27, Microsoft introduced MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, its first artificial intelligence model specifically designed for cybersecurity. This new tool aims to detect vulnerabilities in complex codebases. It integrates into MDASH, Microsoft's multi-agent platform dedicated to detecting and correcting software flaws. Simultaneously, Microsoft announced Project Perception, a platform of AI agents aimed at automating certain tasks for security teams.
A Model Designed to Track Complex Vulnerabilities
MAI-Cyber-1-Flash is derived from MAI-Thinking-1, a reasoning model developed by Microsoft and unveiled in June alongside six other internal models. This model is compact and cost-effective to use, having been trained on operational and remediation data accumulated by Microsoft's security teams over the years.
MAI-Cyber-1-Flash does not operate in isolation. It is integrated into MDASH, a platform unveiled by Microsoft in May, which orchestrates over 100 specialized agents through a multi-step process, including preparation, scanning, adversarial debate among agents, deduplication, and proof of exploitability. At its launch, MDASH, using third-party models, achieved a score of 88.45% on CyberGym, the best at that time.
With the integration of MAI-Cyber-1-Flash alongside OpenAI's GPT-5.4, which is more expensive to use, up to 90% of common security tasks are now managed by MAI-Cyber-1-Flash. GPT-5.4 is reserved for the 10% of the most complex cases, allowing Microsoft to cut costs in half compared to the current MDASH setup. On CyberGym, the combination of MAI-Cyber-1-Flash, GPT-5.4, and MDASH achieves a score of 95.95%, about 12 points higher than Claude Mythos 5 from Anthropic.
Project Perception: An Agent Platform for Continuous Defense
MAI-Cyber-1-Flash is integrated into Project Perception via MDASH. This new agent platform will be available in public preview on August 3, initially within Microsoft Defender, before gradually expanding to all of Microsoft's security products. Billing will be consumption-based, in units called Security Compute Units, with the volume depending on the intensity of the tasks performed by the agents.
Project Perception deploys a team of agents divided into three distinct roles:
- Red Agents: They simulate attacks, mimicking the behavior of an attacker seeking to exploit a vulnerability.
- Blue Agents: They detect threats and prioritize them based on severity.
- Green Agents: They apply necessary patches and close identified gaps.
Actions with significant impact still require human validation. Microsoft thus maintains a clear division of roles, where agents handle operational tasks while security teams retain responsibility for strategic decisions.
Cybersecurity, a New Battleground for AI Giants
By 2026, cybersecurity has become a priority for major players in artificial intelligence. Anthropic led the way in April with Claude Mythos Preview, a model so effective in vulnerability detection that it was deemed too sensitive for public access. This model was reserved for about fifty partner organizations through Project Glasswing, before a public version, Fable 5, was launched with safeguards redirecting sensitive queries to Claude Opus 4.8. OpenAI responded with GPT-5.4-Cyber, before consolidating its tools under the Daybreak banner in May.
To prove the superiority of its innovation, Microsoft needed to demonstrate that its model outperformed its competitors on CyberGym. However, the company does not always specify the conditions under which rival models were evaluated, nor whether they used a similar agent harness to its own.
