Microsoft Seeks to Cut AI Costs
In the face of continuously rising costs associated with artificial intelligence, many companies are looking for solutions to lighten their expenses. Microsoft, one of the technology giants, has recently decided to follow this trend by reducing its reliance on software from OpenAI and Anthropic. Instead, the company is betting on its own artificial intelligence models to optimize its costs.
Use of Internal Models for Office
Microsoft has begun integrating its own AI models, called MAI, into its flagship applications such as Excel and Word. According to a Bloomberg report, these internal models now handle a portion of user queries. Previously, Microsoft primarily relied on models developed by OpenAI and Anthropic to power its Office 365 suite.
Development of New AI Models
While Microsoft continues to use third-party models, the company is increasingly investing in the development of its own AI agents. At its annual Build conference, Microsoft announced the launch of seven new MAI models. Among these innovations are an agentic coder and a text-to-image generator, demonstrating the company's commitment to strengthening its internal capabilities.
Microsoft’s Response
When asked by TechCrunch, Microsoft chose not to comment further on this cost-cutting strategy. However, this approach aligns with a broader trend observed in the technology industry.
A General Trend Towards Cost Reduction
Microsoft is not alone in this quest for savings. Other major tech companies, such as Amazon, Uber, Meta, and Accenture, have also taken similar steps to limit their expenses. This trend has intensified following a period of heavy resource consumption earlier this year, marked by increased media attention on corporate cost-saving strategies.
The Challenge of AI Costs
The high cost of AI services has become a major topic of debate in the industry. Some Silicon Valley companies are even considering turning to Chinese models for more economical solutions, despite security concerns. This situation highlights the financial challenges faced by companies seeking to integrate AI into their operations.
