Microsoft Retires Mico from Copilot's Voice Mode
Microsoft has announced that its character Mico, reminiscent of Clippy, will no longer serve as the interface for Copilot's voice mode.
Mico was launched in Copilot's voice mode less than a year ago. According to a support page, Microsoft plans to move Mico to its Learn Live platform, where the avatar will have "more things to react to," as reported by GeekWire.
Mico was introduced in Copilot's voice mode last October, with Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman presenting the avatar as a way to give a "personality" to the chatbot. This character reacted in real-time to what you said, with facial expressions and animations.
Mico joins the long list of virtual assistants that Microsoft has retired over the years, such as Clippy, Cortana, and Rover. Microsoft's support page states: "Mico helped us learn about warmth, expressiveness, and how people want to interact with AI." These insights will influence the evolution of Copilot.
Microsoft is retiring Mico from Copilot "in waves." This change is part of Microsoft's plans to merge its Copilot applications with Microsoft 365 Copilot. It also comes a few months after an AI reorganization that placed Jacob Andreou at the helm of Copilot, while Suleyman focused on developing new AI models.
