Microsoft Teams Up with Amazon to Overcome GitHub's AI Challenges
Microsoft, under the leadership of CEO Satya Nadella, has made the strategic decision to collaborate with Amazon to address the capacity issues faced by GitHub, its coding platform, due to the surge in artificial intelligence usage. This decision, reported by two sources familiar with the matter, follows a series of AI-related outages.
GitHub, acquired by Microsoft in 2018, is an essential tool for engineers who use it to store, manage, and collaborate on code. While GitHub has primarily managed its own data centers, Microsoft had planned to fully migrate the platform to its Azure cloud service by 2027. However, the growing demand for AI has led Microsoft to rely on Amazon to meet this pressure.
The AI Pressure on GitHub
AI-based coding tools have simplified the software development process, resulting in a massive influx of new code on GitHub. This increase has strained the platform's computing resources. GitHub commits, which are records of code changes, are expected to reach 14 billion by 2026, up from 1 billion in 2025, according to Kyle Daigle, Director of Operations, who spoke on X in April. To manage this growing activity, Microsoft has decided to add additional computing capacity through Amazon Web Services.
This decision is notable as Microsoft and AWS are competing for market share in the cloud sector. Entrusting business to a direct competitor, rather than addressing GitHub's needs through Azure, is not ideal for Microsoft. However, the AI-driven demand is so strong that other major tech companies are also entering into similar agreements. For example, SpaceX and Google recently announced a deal where Google will pay SpaceX $920 million per month for AI computing capacity from October 2026 to June 2029.
A Multi-Cloud Strategy for GitHub
A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed that GitHub uses multiple cloud providers but did not specifically comment on Amazon's involvement. "The incredible increase in agentic development that began late last year has tested the limits of our infrastructure," he stated. To meet this demand, Microsoft "is accelerating both our transition to Azure and continuing to explore a multi-cloud strategy to ensure we have the future capacity, computing elasticity, and horizontal scale needed to support ongoing growth."
For its part, an Amazon spokesperson clarified that the company does not comment on individual customers but emphasized that "customers choose AWS because they need a global infrastructure that operates reliably, securely, and efficiently at scale."
Ensuring Service Continuity
While these agreements may seem unusual, the primary goal is to keep popular services operational for customers, regardless of the necessary collaborations. For Microsoft, this appears to be the case with GitHub, which has experienced dozens of major outages in 2026.
Mitchell Hashimoto, co-founder of the startup HashiCorp, expressed in April that GitHub "is no longer a place for serious work if it blocks you for hours a day, every day." Although GitHub had an early advantage among engineers, it faces increased competition from AI tools such as Cursor and Claude Code from Anthropic.
Microsoft recently projected that its capital expenditures for 2026 will reach $190 billion, primarily to expand data center capacity. However, many data center projects are delayed, and Microsoft must support a number of other significant AI projects and businesses with computing capacity. During an internal meeting late last year, a Microsoft executive mentioned the need to renovate GitHub to compete with Cursor and Claude Code, according to a recording reviewed by Business Insider.
