Microsoft Abandons Its Xbox Copilot Gaming AI
Barely announced, Microsoft's Copilot Gaming project has already been scrapped. This surprising decision was revealed by Kotaku and is part of a series of changes orchestrated by Asha Sharma, the new head of the Xbox division. The project, which was intended to be an AI assistant for gamers, will ultimately not see the light of day.
Copilot Gaming aimed to assist players by providing in-game tips, contextual help, and dynamic interactions. This project was part of Microsoft's broader strategy to integrate artificial intelligence into all its products. However, on Xbox, this promise never really found its audience.
Game (Already) Over for Copilot Gaming
Both internally and among players, interest in Copilot Gaming seemed limited, if not nonexistent. The project has therefore been abandoned, a decision that Asha Sharma fully embraces. She stated her intention to eliminate features that do not align with the future vision of the platform.
After several months of testing, Copilot Gaming appears to be a poorly calibrated experiment, symptomatic of a time when AI is being forcefully introduced into many applications, sometimes without a real need. This decision marks a turning point in Microsoft's strategy for its gaming console.
A Change in Leadership at Xbox
Since taking the helm of Xbox at the beginning of 2026, Asha Sharma has adopted a radically different management style. A former head of the CoreAI division, she was expected to strengthen the integration of artificial intelligence. However, her priority seems to be returning to the fundamentals of video gaming.
Among her notable actions, she has accelerated developments, ended the "This is an Xbox" campaign, strengthened ties with the community, and simplified the user experience for both gamers and developers. This new direction contrasts sharply with recent experiments and is reflected in strong decisions, such as the abandonment of Copilot Gaming.
An Internal Restructuring
This strategic refocusing is accompanied by an internal reshuffle. Asha Sharma has brought in four new executives from her former CoreAI division to provide sharper technical and product expertise. In return, two historical figures from Xbox, Kevin Gammill and Roanne Sones, will soon be leaving their positions.
For Asha Sharma, it is about finding the right formula to get Xbox back on track after a turbulent period. The abandonment of Copilot Gaming illustrates this desire to focus on innovations that users genuinely expect.
