Microsoft Integrates Legal Agent into Word for Lawyers

Microsoft recently announced the integration of a new artificial intelligence agent, called Legal Agent, into its Word software, specifically designed for legal teams. This development aims to simplify the management of complex documents and optimize tasks such as contract review.

The Legal Agent is designed to follow structured workflows based on real legal practices. Unlike general AI models, this agent handles clearly defined and repeatable tasks, such as clause-by-clause review of contracts by referring to a manual. Sumit Chauhan, corporate vice president of the Office product group at Microsoft, emphasizes that this approach allows for a more precise interpretation tailored to legal needs.

Moreover, the Legal Agent is capable of working with existing documents, analyzing tracked changes to identify potential risks and obligations. It also manages the history of negotiations, providing a comprehensive view of contractual processes. This feature is currently being rolled out in the United States as part of Microsoft's Frontier program, marking a significant step in the integration of AI into office tools.

The deployment of the Legal Agent is part of a broader effort to integrate agentic features into Word. This initiative comes after Microsoft recruited several AI specialists and engineers from Robin AI, a startup specializing in AI-driven contract review, which struggled to make a mark in the market.
