MiniMax: An AI Model with 2.7 Trillion Parameters in Open Source
The Chinese AI startup MiniMax is working on a new language model with 2.7 trillion parameters. MiniMax plans to make this model open source. This was reported by The Information, citing two people familiar with the company's projects. This model would be larger than any other Chinese AI model currently on the market.
Internally, MiniMax refers to it as M3 Pro, although the name may change before the launch. The two sources indicate that a release could occur as early as the third quarter. The company's current top-performing model, M3, has 428 billion parameters. Larger models tend to perform better on tasks requiring complex reasoning and multi-step instructions.
Chinese open-source models have gained popularity among developers this year, particularly those looking for cost-effective models to handle high-volume and less critical tasks. MiniMax is competing with Zhipu, DeepSeek, and Moonshot AI. However, recent reports suggest that the Chinese government wants to tighten controls on future releases of such models.
