Mistral AI Reaches $24 Billion After Record Funding Round

The French AI model company closes a $3.5 billion Series D round, bringing its valuation to over $24 billion. The operation, led by Samsung Electronics with EQT and PSG Equity, comes as AI-related fundraising is multiplying in Europe, and venture capital is experiencing its best quarter in four years.
European Venture Capital Reaches $24 Billion in Q2 and Grows in AI
According to Crunchbase, Europe experienced its highest level of venture capital funding in four years in the second quarter. Startups on the continent raised $24 billion during this period, approximately one-third more than the previous quarter and about two-thirds more than the $14.4 billion recorded in the second quarter of 2025. Among the major operations in AI, Isomorphic Labs, a London-based subsidiary of Google, announced in May a $2.1 billion Series B funding round led by Thrive Capital. The AI data center specialist Nscale secured $2 billion in March during a Series C round, valuing the company at $14.6 billion, a deal co-led by 8090 Industries and Aker, and subsequently took on several billion dollars in debt, according to Crunchbase. Mistral's new Series D exceeds the amount of its Series C, which was then the largest round ever raised by a European AI company.

Series D Led by Samsung, with EQT and PSG Equity
Samsung Electronics led the funding round, co-led by the Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT, with participation from existing investor PSG Equity. Mistral AI announced on Tuesday a $3.5 billion Series D funding round, bringing its valuation to over $24 billion, nearly double in a year. This operation comes about a year after a $2 billion Series C that valued the company at $13.7 billion. Since its inception in 2023, Mistral AI has raised $7.5 billion.
R&D, Infrastructure, and International Trade Announced as Priorities
Mistral AI states that the new funds will significantly enhance its cutting-edge research. The company also specifies its intention to expand its infrastructure and accelerate its commercial growth as well as its international footprint. It claims to operate in 20 countries and has over 125 client companies worldwide, including Airbus, ASML, BMW, and HSBC.
Position in Europe and Comparison with American and Chinese Giants
At this valuation level, Mistral AI remains the highest-valued foundational model company in Europe. According to Crunchbase, there are seven leading private labs that exceed a $20 billion valuation—eight if ByteDance is included—all of which are located in the United States or China. Mistral designs models intended for text generation, programming, and document analysis, positioning itself against OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. The company offers models that users can customize and run on their own infrastructure, without having to rely exclusively on an external cloud provider.
