Mistral AI Takes on Debt for Strategic Data Center
Mistral AI has recently secured a massive loan of $830 million to fund an ambitious project: the construction of a new data center in Bruyeres-le-Chatel, near Paris. This financing allows the startup to maintain its independence by avoiding the dilution of its equity, although it imposes significant debt on the company. However, Mistral is not expected to be profitable in the near future, which poses a risk both for the company and for the banks backing the loan.
The data center will be equipped with 13,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GB300 GPUs and will offer an energy capacity of 44 megawatts. This project is supported by a consortium of international banks, including Bpifrance, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, HSBC, La Banque Postale, MUFG, and Natixis.
Ambitious Goals for 2027
Mistral AI aims to achieve a computing capacity of 200 megawatts across Europe by the end of 2027. This expansion seeks to meet the growing demand from governments and businesses for the development of artificial intelligence systems. As the only European high-performance AI startup, Mistral AI is positioning itself to capitalize on the increasing concerns in Europe regarding technological dependence on the United States.
