An Ambitious Partnership Between Mistral and Microsoft

France, often perceived as lagging in the race for artificial intelligence, has just made a significant move thanks to Mistral. This French company stands out by developing its own language models, competing with those of Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI. Although French models are still behind their American and Chinese counterparts, the latest ranking from Artificial Analysis places Mistral's most advanced model in 24th position. This ranking may seem modest, but it does not reflect the scale of French ambitions. Indeed, Mistral has just secured a major deal with Microsoft, valued at several billion, which could change the game.

Strengthening Existing Collaboration

This new agreement between Microsoft and Mistral is not a first, but rather an extension of an already existing partnership. Through this commitment, Microsoft will benefit from Mistral's computing power to deploy its products and services across Europe. According to an official statement, "Microsoft and Mistral announce the conclusion of a new agreement aimed at developing AI infrastructure in Europe. Microsoft will leverage Mistral's extensive GPU infrastructure, based in Europe, to enhance AI development capacity and support the delivery of Microsoft’s cloud and AI services." This multi-billion dollar financial commitment underscores the strategic importance of this collaboration.

The Importance of GPU Infrastructures

Marjorle Jamiewicz, Mistral's Chief Revenue Officer, highlighted the significance of this agreement in a context where access to GPUs for AI is becoming increasingly competitive. She emphasized that Mistral "invested very early" in the necessary infrastructure for artificial intelligence, which today validates their strategy. This early investment allows Mistral to position itself as a key player in the European AI landscape.

Integration of Mistral Models into the Microsoft Ecosystem

As part of this agreement, Microsoft announced the integration of Mistral's Medium 3.5 and OCR 4 models into its Microsoft Foundry platform. Additionally, the Medium 3.5 model will also be available on Microsoft Copilot Studio, a platform dedicated to businesses for the development of intelligent agents. Arthur Mensch, Mistral's leader, expressed his satisfaction by stating: "With Microsoft as a partner, our models reach businesses and public institutions globally, thanks to a reliable platform for the most demanding and regulated workloads, available wherever our clients operate."
