Mistral AI Strengthens Its Infrastructure with Massive Loan

The European startup Mistral AI has recently secured a loan of $830 million to expand the capacity of its data center in the Paris region. This funding will enable the company to bolster its infrastructure, which is essential for supporting its ambitions to develop open-source AI models in Europe.

Founded in 2023, Mistral AI has quickly established itself as a key player in the field of artificial intelligence in Europe, aiming to compete with American giants such as OpenAI and Meta. Since its inception, the startup has raised nearly €2.8 billion and achieved an impressive valuation of €11.7 billion. Mistral AI also positions itself as a “sovereign” AI partner for businesses in Europe.

International Banking Support

The financing has been secured from several major banks, including Bpifrance, BNP Paribas, Crédit Agricole CIB, Natixis CIB, and La Banque Postale in France, as well as HSBC in the UK and MUFG in Japan. This financial backing reflects the confidence of banking institutions in Mistral AI's potential.

Strategic Expansion in Europe

Since February 2025, Mistral AI has been working on building its first data center in southern Paris. With this new funding, the company plans to acquire 13,800 Nvidia GPUs, thereby increasing the site's capacity to 44 megawatts (MW). This data center will play a crucial role in training Mistral's AI models and those of its clients, with commissioning expected within the next three months.

In parallel, Mistral AI has announced an investment of $1.4 billion to develop new data centers in Sweden, aiming to achieve a total capacity of 200 MW across Europe by the end of 2027. Additionally, a joint venture with the Abu Dhabi fund MGX, Bpifrance, and Nvidia is underway to create an AI campus in France, equipped with 1.4 gigawatts (GW) of computing power.

Vision for European Autonomy

Arthur Mensch, CEO of Mistral AI, emphasized the importance of this expansion to ensure innovation and autonomy in AI in Europe. "Expanding our infrastructure in Europe is essential to empower our clients and ensure that innovation and autonomy in AI remain at the heart of Europe," he stated. This strategy responds to a growing demand from governments, businesses, and research institutions for customized AI solutions that are independent of third-party cloud providers.
