Full Analysis

The French artificial intelligence lab, Mistral AI, is in advanced discussions to raise approximately 3 billion euros, or 3.5 billion dollars, according to a Bloomberg report citing anonymous sources.

This new funding round would bring Mistral's valuation to around 20 billion euros, or 23.15 billion dollars, nearly double its previous valuation of 11.7 billion euros achieved during a Series C funding round last September.

Founded in 2023, Mistral AI has quickly established itself as one of the leading AI startups in Europe, with the ambition of democratizing access to cutting-edge artificial intelligence. Unlike its American competitors, Mistral has opted for a more open approach by making some of its foundational language models accessible with open weights, allowing for customization by users.

At the same time, the company offers closed models tailored to various use cases, including programming, cloning, voice generation, and optical character recognition.

As Europe seeks to reduce its dependence on American technologies, Mistral AI positions itself as a more local and sovereign alternative. The company is in the process of building a data center near Paris and has formed strategic partnerships with the French military, the government of Luxembourg, and several major European companies.

Despite these advancements, Mistral has raised only about 4 billion dollars so far, according to PitchBook, which remains a fraction of the amounts raised by its American rivals OpenAI and Anthropic, which have raised 186 billion and 161.25 billion dollars, respectively. These American labs also benefit from significantly higher valuations, highlighting their lead in terms of revenue, model adoption, and enterprise demand.

Mistral AI did not immediately respond to requests for comments on this funding round.
