Mistral AI Aims for a Record Valuation of 20 Billion Euros

Mistral AI, the French startup specializing in artificial intelligence, is in talks to raise €3 billion, which could boost its valuation to €20 billion. This operation, reported by Bloomberg, would strengthen Mistral's position as a European leader in the AI field, providing a sovereign alternative to American giants.

Founded in 2023, Mistral AI has quickly made a name for itself with its cutting-edge, accessible, and customizable AI models. The company offers "open weights," allowing organizations to tailor AI systems to their specific needs. It also markets proprietary models for applications such as software development, voice generation, and optical character recognition.

This approach has attracted many European players looking to reduce their dependence on American technologies. Mistral has already established partnerships with the French military, the Luxembourg government, and several major European groups, and is building a data center near Paris.

The potential valuation of €20 billion would represent nearly a doubling from the €11.7 billion reached during its Series C funding round last September. Despite these advancements, Mistral remains far behind American giants like OpenAI and Anthropic, whose valuations exceed $100 billion. Since its inception, Mistral has raised approximately $4 billion, a modest figure compared to the massive investments across the Atlantic.

If the fundraising materializes, Mistral would have additional resources to develop its infrastructure and models, thus addressing the growing needs for data control and digital sovereignty in Europe. However, as discussions are still preliminary, the terms of the financing could evolve.
