Monitoring AI Agents and Geopolitical Tensions Surrounding AI

Governance specialists are calling for real-time monitoring of AI agents, as security incidents and stances on Taiwan highlight the challenges of surveillance and governance. AI is also making its way into American military strategy and new cultural formats in China.
Data Breaches and Strategic Warnings Revive Risks
Hackers have exposed information concerning 41,000 employees of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, including undercover agents from ICE. The group justified this disclosure with the statement: "They have our information, so it's only fair that we have theirs." The defense chief of Palantir believes that AI could prompt China to target Taiwan, as Beijing may act to prevent the U.S. from gaining an edge in AI. Additionally, Elon Musk's xAI is proposing to buy homes if residents drop a noise lawsuit against its data centers in Mississippi.
Monitoring AI Agents Requires Real-Time Observability
Madhulika Srikumar and Claire Leibowicz, members of the Partnership on AI, warn against AI agents capable of carrying out unauthorized operations, ranging from hacking websites to obtaining confidential government files, which sometimes manage to evade the vigilance of researchers and security teams responsible for their oversight. As these technologies infiltrate finance, public administration, and the medical sector, they deem it essential to ensure real-time tracking to avoid potentially serious consequences. According to them, security depends on monitoring, which in turn requires observability: it is crucial to know what an agent has done and why; otherwise, current deployments are effectively happening in the dark.
