Moonshot AI Attracts Attention with Massive Fundraising
Moonshot AI, an artificial intelligence lab based in Beijing, has recently raised $2 billion, achieving an impressive valuation of $20 billion. This fundraising was announced by Huafeng Capital, which advised some of the investors involved in this round. The venture capital branch of Meituan, Long-Z Investment, led the round, with notable participation from Tsinghua Capital, China Mobile, and CPE Yuanfeng.
Rapid Growth for Moonshot AI
Over the past six months, Moonshot AI has successfully raised a total of $3.9 billion. In 2025, the company was valued at $4.3 billion, and this figure more than doubled to reach $10 billion in early 2026 after a $700 million fundraising round. Founded in 2023 by Yang Zhilin, a former researcher at Meta AI and Google Brain, Moonshot AI has quickly established itself as one of the most prominent AI labs in China.
Kimi K2.6 Model Tops Rankings
Moonshot's open-weight language model Kimi K2.5 has made waves in the coding world, nearly reaching the top benchmarks. The latest model, Kimi K2.6, is currently the second most used language model on the OpenRouter platform. This popularity reflects the quality and efficiency of the models developed by Moonshot.
The Rise of Chinese Open-Source AI Models
Investor interest in open-weight AI models produced by Chinese labs is on the rise. Moonshot's annual recurring revenue surpassed $200 million in April, thanks to an increase in paid subscriptions and API usage. Meanwhile, DeepSeek, another leading Chinese AI lab, is reportedly in discussions to raise external funds, with an estimated valuation of $45 billion.
Competition Intensifies in the AI Market
Moonshot AI is not alone in the market. Its Kimi models compete with giants like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude. Other competitors include ByteDance's Doubao, Alibaba's Qwen, Zhipu's Z.ai, and DeepSeek. Some of these competitors, such as Zhipu AI, have even gone public, highlighting the growing demand for their AI models.
A Promising Future for Chinese AI
Moonshot's investors include heavyweights such as Alibaba, Tencent, HongShan (formerly Sequoia China), ZhenFund, IDG Capital, and 5Y Capital. This diversity of investors and the scale of the funds raised demonstrate confidence in the potential of Moonshot AI and Chinese open-source AI to transform the global tech landscape.
