Moonshot AI, the Beijing-based Chinese company behind the Kimi chatbot, aims to achieve an impressive valuation of $30 billion in its upcoming funding round. This amount would represent more than a sixfold increase from its projected valuation of $4.3 billion by the end of 2025, and a 50% increase compared to its last funding round in May, which set its value at $20 billion. According to the South China Morning Post, citing a source close to the matter, Moonshot AI hopes to raise between $1 billion and $2 billion.
The company's annual recurring revenue has doubled, reaching approximately $200 million by April, reflecting its rapid growth. Technologically, Moonshot AI positions itself as a serious competitor to American providers. Its flagship product, Kimi K2.6, is capable of competing with GPT-5.4 and Claude Opus 4.6 on coding benchmarks.
Competition and Market Strategy
Despite its advancements, Moonshot AI operates in a highly competitive Chinese AI market. It faces major players such as DeepSeek, Alibaba, and MiniMax. Last April, DeepSeek launched V4-Pro, the largest open-weight model to date, surpassing Kimi K2.6 in size and offering a lower cost than its competitors.
Meanwhile, Moonshot AI is considering an initial public offering in Hong Kong. To facilitate this process, the company is reportedly dismantling its offshore corporate structure.
