Moxie Marlinspike and Meta: An Alliance to Secure Conversational AI
Moxie Marlinspike, known for securing WhatsApp with end-to-end encryption, is partnering with Meta to launch Confer. This new initiative aims to protect conversations with Meta AI, making them inaccessible to anyone, similar to the security provided by end-to-end encryption.
Meta has announced its intention to integrate Confer's privacy technology into its upcoming artificial intelligence products. This integration will leverage Meta's most advanced models, thereby ensuring enhanced protection of personal data.
A Return to Roots for Marlinspike
Ten years after helping secure WhatsApp, Marlinspike is back in the spotlight with Confer. This project integrates with Meta AI to ensure the confidentiality of exchanges, even for prominent figures like Mark Zuckerberg. The announcement, made on March 17, 2026, highlights a certain irony: while Meta recently removed end-to-end encryption for private messages on Instagram, it chooses to bolster security in its artificial intelligence tools.
In a blog post titled "Confer Brings Fundamental Privacy to Meta's AI," Marlinspike emphasizes that conversational agents, such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini, or Le Chat de Mistral, have become true "data lakes" containing sensitive information. He compares the use of these language models to keeping a diary, but one that is accessible via an API access point.
A Renewed Collaboration
This partnership is not unprecedented. Marlinspike and Meta had previously collaborated to integrate the Signal protocol into WhatsApp, enabling end-to-end encryption by default. Marlinspike's return to Meta, often criticized for its data practices, raises questions.
However, Marlinspike stresses the urgency of protecting users in light of the transformation of AI assistants into personalized advertising platforms. He warns that if advertising extends to artificial intelligence assistants, they could gain deep insights into our concerns. Despite these worries, Marlinspike remains confident in Meta's commitment to developing privacy-respecting AI models, incorporating Confer's privacy protection technology into its future innovations.
