MSI Claw 8 EX AI Plus: Ambitious Return to Handheld Gaming

MSI is back in the spotlight with its new handheld console, the Claw 8 EX AI Plus, unveiled just before Computex 2026. After an initial model that failed to make a significant impact, MSI is clearly aiming to do better.

The Claw 8 EX AI Plus stands out with the integration of the Intel Arc G3 Extreme processor, replacing the previous Intel Lunar Lake chip. This new processor, equipped with Xe3 graphics cores, is specifically designed for handheld consoles. MSI hopes to deliver optimal performance without overheating or sacrificing battery life. However, Acer has already gotten ahead of MSI by using this chip in its Predator Atlas 8.

The console offers up to 32 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and an NVMe M.2 SSD slot for storage. Its 8-inch touchscreen displays a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels with a refresh rate of 120 Hz. It runs on Windows 11, which could influence the user experience. While the technical specifications are impressive, MSI still needs to prove that the Claw 8 EX AI Plus can deliver on its promises in real-world conditions.

MSI has also rethought the ergonomics of its console. The chassis has been improved with new grips, and the joysticks and triggers now utilize Hall effect technology for better precision. A more powerful linear motor promises more responsive vibrations. The 'Void Purple' color adds a distinctive touch to the device's aesthetics.

However, battery life remains a major question mark. MSI speaks of better energy efficiency without providing specific figures. The price and release date of the Claw 8 EX AI Plus have not yet been confirmed, but leaks suggest a price exceeding 1,500 euros, well above the 1,000 euros of the previous model.

The new Claw 8 EX AI Plus intrigues with its technical and ergonomic improvements, but also raises questions about its positioning amid intense competition and a potentially high price.
