Neill Blomkamp Launches Unreleased AI Short Film with Nightborne
Neill Blomkamp, best known for directing District 9, has released Nightborne, his first short film entirely generated by AI. This 13-minute science fiction and horror film was created from scratch using the video generation model Seedance 2.0, with Blomkamp directing frame by frame using text prompts. Shot in a documentary style, the film follows a presumed dead American pilot and a secret military program that brings fallen soldiers back to life.
The faces and voices of 32 real people were used under licensing agreements, and human artists created the concept art. Blomkamp stated on X that he now plans to shoot a feature film in the same format. He has also founded Barley Studios, a new AI film studio succeeding Oats Studios, which specializes in traditional film production.
AI still faces skepticism in the creative industries, fueled by concerns over training data sourced from creative works without consent, potential job losses, copyright issues, and fears of declining quality. Nevertheless, it seems to be gaining traction as a production tool.
