Netflix Integrates AI into 300 Productions, Revolutionizing the Industry
Netflix is now using AI in approximately 300 productions, primarily in post-production. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos shared these figures during the company's latest earnings call. AI accelerates the entire process, he stated, from concept development and previewing to delivery.
Specific use cases include expanding crowd scenes and historical battle sequences that would have been cut for budget or time reasons without this technology.
The documentary series "The American Experiment" features 17 minutes of AI-assisted footage, produced twice as fast and at half the cost, according to Sarandos. The savings are "likely" going towards creating more content, rather than reducing Netflix's $20 billion budget. Sarandos remarked, "It takes great artists to create something great, and AI doesn’t change that. AI will give creatives better tools to bring their visions to life."
Beyond its Interpositive tool, Netflix also utilizes Eyeline and manages its own animation lab.
Netflix's deployment illustrates how quickly AI is spreading in the entertainment sector, even as creative resistance continues. The video model Seedance from ByteDance has also faced official criticism, but Joel Kuwahara, producer of The Simpsons, claims that many studios are quietly using it behind the scenes. The industry's attitude, according to Kuwahara, follows a "don't ask, don't tell" approach.
