Netflix recently announced the launch of an animation studio called INKubator, which will integrate generative AI at the heart of its creative process. Scheduled for 2026, this project marks a significant step in the evolution of the streaming platform, which is exploring new ways to produce animated content.
For several years, AI has gradually infiltrated the entertainment sector, contributing to various areas such as movie recommendations, special effects, dubbing, and even scriptwriting. With INKubator, Netflix is taking a new step by creating an animation studio designed to work natively with AI tools.
A Next-Generation Animation Studio
According to reports from The Verge and Engadget, INKubator will initially focus on producing short films and special episodes. To carry out this project, Netflix is seeking diverse talent, including software engineers, producers, CGI artists, and technical leads specialized in AI technologies.
The official description of the studio mentions a next-generation approach aimed at simplifying and accelerating certain traditional stages of animation production. AI will no longer just be an assistive tool but will become a central component of the creative pipeline.
Towards Longer Formats
Although details about future INKubator productions remain vague, a recent job posting hints at an ambition to transition from short films to longer formats. If this experiment proves successful, the studio could produce series and even full-length animated films.
Netflix is not new to experimenting with AI. The company has already integrated this technology into its advertising campaigns and continues to innovate with its recommendation and search tools. Additionally, the acquisition of the startup InterPositive, specialized in AI and founded by Ben Affleck, underscores Netflix's commitment to this field.
At the same time, Netflix is developing its mobile strategy with vertical content and very short formats, providing an ideal testing ground for AI-assisted productions. This allows the platform to experiment with new ideas without the financial risks associated with a costly animated blockbuster.
