The Impact of ChatGPT on the Design Process
During a design review session, a junior designer presented a new integration flow consisting of six distinct steps. Each step was displayed on a separate screen, with smooth transitions and a well-defined progress indicator. Before the team could provide feedback, the designer mentioned having submitted the design to ChatGPT. The AI had identified contrast issues on the call to action and suggested tightening the spacing between the form fields, adjustments that had already been made.
Apparent Efficiency, But at What Cost?
The silence that followed was not due to inappropriate corrections. In fact, the adjustments adhered to WCAG standards and made the spacing cleaner. However, the dynamic of the critique had changed. The traditional question "What do you think?" had transformed into "The AI has already validated it, any objections?" No one contested, and the session ended fifteen minutes earlier than scheduled.
A Reflection on the Use of AI in Design
On paper, this situation seemed to represent increased efficiency: faster review cycles and fewer back-and-forths. These results are often valued during sprint retrospectives. However, after fifteen years of experience managing design teams for startups and scale-ups, it became clear that those fifteen minutes saved came at a hidden cost.
