Nscale Acquires Anyscale to Strengthen Its Position in AI
In a strategic move aimed at capturing a larger share of its clients' artificial intelligence investments, British neo-cloud Nscale has announced the acquisition of software startup Anyscale. This company specializes in helping businesses scale their AI workloads across various data centers and servers.
Nscale has spent $1.65 billion on this acquisition, although the source of this information remains anonymous.
Anyscale and Its Journey Towards AI Scalability
Anyscale was founded by the team behind the distributed programming framework Python Project Ray, an open-source project. Initially, the startup focused on developing a platform for executing projects that require significant computing power. However, the emergence of GPT-3 in 2022, which significantly highlighted artificial intelligence, prompted Anyscale to pivot its activities. The company then specialized in scalability for serving and training large language models, as well as other complex tasks such as data curation, inference, and reinforcement learning. Anyscale's platform, built on Ray, offers advanced tools for developers, along with observability and orchestration features.
An Acquisition Aligned with Nscale's Strategy
Nscale's acquisition of Anyscale perfectly aligns with its strategy to build a vertical offering to meet the growing demands for computing. Nscale has already established operations in various sectors such as energy, data centers, and orchestration software. With the addition of Anyscale, Nscale will now be able to offer solutions for managing and scaling AI workloads.
In a statement, Anyscale emphasized that this union would allow both companies to co-design the software layer and the underlying infrastructure, a synergy that could not be achieved by either company alone.
Nscale's Financial Ambitions and Partnerships
Last March, Nscale raised $2 billion in a Series C funding round, bringing its valuation to $14.6 billion. Its investors include heavyweights such as Nvidia, Nokia, Blue Owl, Dell, and the Norwegian industrial conglomerate Aker. Nscale has actively invested these funds, along with various debt financing, to secure strategic partnerships in computing and data centers with companies like Microsoft, British Telecom, and Nordcraft.
Anyscale: Growth and Integration
Anyscale, which reached a valuation of $1.38 billion during its Series C funding round in 2022, recently reported a 70% increase in its revenue in the last quarter compared to the previous quarter. Nscale clarified that Anyscale would continue to operate under its own brand while serving its current customer base. The approximately 200 employees of Anyscale will join Nscale, thereby enhancing its technical and operational capabilities.
