Why it matters : This operation highlights the concentration of revenue in AI infrastructure and the risks associated with reliance on a small number of strategic clients.

The British specialist Nscale is experiencing rapid growth and is preparing for a listing in New York. Its revenues are rising quickly, but its losses remain substantial, while most of its commercial commitments hinge on two clients with strict conditions.

Rapid Revenue Growth but Losses Exceeding One Billion

For the six months ending June 30, Nscale reported $140.6 million in revenue, up from $10.4 million a year earlier. At the same time, its net losses reached $1.02 billion, compared to $369 million a year prior. Earlier this month, Nvidia, described as one of its main investors, agreed to provide $1 billion in convertible debt as part of a broader $3.1 billion financing. Ahead of its anticipated listing on the NYSE, Nscale aims for a valuation of $35 billion and seeks to raise $3 billion. The company was previously valued at $14.6 billion during a $2 billion Series C funding round led by Aker ASA and 8090 Industries.

Massive Commitments Dominated by Microsoft and Anthropic

Since its spin-off from Arkon Energy two years ago, Nscale has reported over $103 billion in signed contracts. Nearly 85% of this amount is attributable to two main contracts: a $43.8 billion commitment to provide computing services to Microsoft until 2033, and another worth $44.6 billion resulting from a supply agreement with Anthropic. The conclusion of the deal with Anthropic depends on Nscale's ability to secure financing, while the lab retains the option to disengage or cancel the agreement if certain goals, described as "strict" in the filing, are not met.

An Industry Where Dependence on a Few Clients is the Norm

Sona Asset Management highlights that many AI infrastructure providers heavily rely on a small number of clients. CoreWeave generates 67% of its revenue from Microsoft. Applied Digital derives 67% of its revenue from Oracle and 30% from CoreWeave. Sona notes that this interconnection can expose the entire chain to the impact of a setback or strategic shift from a major player.

Sites, Competition, and Governance to Support Expansion

Nscale plans to list on the NYSE and faces competitors such as Nebius, Lambda, and Crusoe. Last week, the latter announced it had raised $3.9 billion, bringing its valuation to $30.9 billion. Nscale operates data centers located in Norway, Portugal, Texas, and West Virginia. Among its board members are Sheryl Sandberg and Nick Clegg, both former executives at Meta, as well as Fidji Simo, identified as a former leader at OpenAI.
