Nvidia Leverages Financing to Boost AI Chip Sales
Alex Yeh, founder and CEO of GMI Cloud, recently revealed that Nvidia has established a financial support system aimed at neoclouds. This initiative is designed to facilitate the acquisition of AI chips for large-scale deployments. In this context, GMI Cloud has committed to investing $500 million to enhance its capabilities.
Nvidia's strategy has sparked discussions around the concept of "circular financing." Earlier this year, Fireworks AI, a startup specializing in artificial intelligence, sought to rent massive computing capacity. Instead of directly acquiring Nvidia GPUs or going through cloud giants like Amazon or Microsoft, some startups, including Fireworks, are turning to specialized cloud providers, the neoclouds. These providers offer faster access to GPUs, more competitive pricing, and infrastructure optimized for AI. Fireworks thus chose GMI Cloud as its partner.
However, a major challenge arose: to meet Fireworks' needs, GMI first had to acquire Nvidia GPU systems through a hardware manufacturer. Banks, hesitant to finance this operation, refused to support GMI because Fireworks was not considered a safe investment. Alex Yeh explained that they then approached Nvidia to discuss an innovative financing model. This model, described by Yeh as an "insurance product," involves Nvidia stepping in financially if a GMI customer stops making payments. In return, GMI shares a portion of its revenue with Nvidia.
GMI has told Business Insider of its commitment to invest $500 million to develop its AI infrastructure through this new financing model. GMI positions itself among the first Asian neoclouds to adopt this approach. This mechanism allows neoclouds to obtain funding they would not have been able to secure otherwise, while providing Nvidia with the opportunity to sell more GPUs. Yeh also noted that rising memory prices impact the economics of this model.
Fireworks recently announced it has raised $1.5 billion, reaching a valuation of $17.5 billion. Despite this, Yeh noted that banks continue to view leading AI startups as risky investments, even as the market evolves rapidly.
Nvidia's Customer Base Expansion through Neoclouds
Other neoclouds, such as Firmus and Sharon AI, have also begun collaborating with Nvidia under this new business model, launched by the chipmaker in July. James Manning, co-founder and CEO of Sharon, stated that this agreement represents a significant evolution in their relationship with Nvidia, transitioning from a mere supplier to a true long-term partner.
David Nicholson, technology advisor at The Futurum Group, emphasized that this strategy allows Nvidia to expand its customer base beyond major cloud providers, many of whom are developing their own competing AI chips. Brad Gastwirth, global research head at Circular Technology, described this model as smart, while warning that it could represent a "yellow flag" for investors. The crucial question remains how Nvidia selects the neoclouds to support in order to minimize its financial risk.
Controversies Surrounding "Circular Financing"
This model echoes Nvidia's complex relationships with companies like CoreWeave and OpenAI, where it plays both the role of investor and supplier. Arman Aleksanian, co-founder and CEO of the neocloud Eleveight AI, which is not involved in Nvidia's new financing program, observes the situation with interest. He acknowledges that criticisms regarding "circular financing" are valid, but only if this financing encourages GPU purchases without real demand.
"I would say that circular financing is problematic only when it creates artificial demand," he stated. "If the capacity is fully utilized by real paying customers, then the financing has achieved its goal."
