Nvidia Earth-2: A Major Advancement in Weather Forecasting
Weather forecasting is on the brink of a radical transformation thanks to Nvidia. The graphics processing giant has announced that its new Earth-2 platform could reduce the time required to compute forecasts by a factor of one thousand, while also improving their accuracy. This innovation aims to establish a new global standard in the field.
In January 2026, Nvidia unveiled a new generation of models for Earth-2, a platform designed as a digital twin of the Earth. This system is intended to simulate the climate in real-time, with the ambition of revolutionizing how we predict the weather, anticipate natural disasters, and plan public policies.
AI Replaces Supercomputers
Currently, weather forecasts rely on complex numerical models that require massive infrastructures to operate. These simulations can take hours, or even longer, to produce actionable results.
With Earth-2, Nvidia integrates data from satellites, radars, weather balloons, and meteorological stations to reconstruct the atmosphere in real-time. Thanks to artificial intelligence, this data is processed in just a few seconds.
This speed allows for multiple simulations and the exploration of various scenarios, providing enhanced responsiveness to critical events. According to Nvidia, the AI of Earth-2 is up to 1000 times faster than traditional methods.
Moreover, Earth-2 models can operate on a single machine equipped with two Nvidia RTX Pro 6000 GPUs, one for calculations and the other for visualizations. This eliminates the need for remote supercomputers, making the technology accessible even to developing countries.
Nvidia has also expressed its intention to make Earth-2 open source, allowing a wide range of stakeholders, including those in the Global South, to adopt these tools. This could democratize access to advanced forecasting, enabling anyone to conduct thousands of simulations to identify extreme events and strengthen infrastructure accordingly.
Global and Local Forecasts
One of the most impressive models of Earth-2 results from collaborations with institutions such as NOAA and MITRE. From a snapshot of the atmosphere, it can generate global forecasts up to 14 days ahead.
Additionally, Nvidia's system can zoom in on specific regions to provide detailed forecasts up to 6 hours for events like storms. Parameters such as wind speed, direction, and precipitation intensity are immediately actionable.
This dual level of forecasting allows governments to anticipate large-scale crises, while local actors in sectors like agriculture, transportation, and energy can adjust their short-term decisions.
Nvidia also discusses "climate in a bottle," an idea that involves compressing 50 years of weather data into a few gigabytes to generate synthetic scenarios. This allows for the replay of past days or the modification of certain parameters to observe future consequences.
The potential applications are vast. Governments can test adaptation policies, businesses can model financial risks related to climate, and the energy sector can optimize solar output through accurate projections.
Earth-2 Redefines the Role of Weather
With Earth-2, weather forecasting shifts from a sometimes uncertain science to a tool capable of quickly exploring possible futures. The concrete impacts of these new models are already visible, particularly in disaster management, optimizing energy networks, reducing agricultural losses, and resilient urban planning.
However, questions remain regarding reliance on proprietary technologies and the reliability of models in extreme contexts. Access for the least equipped countries is also a concern to monitor.
If the promises of Earth-2 materialize, weather could become a key area of global technological competition. Nvidia, with Earth-2, already seems to be at the forefront of this race. It will be crucial to see how this power is shared and how states and industries will leverage it to face an increasingly unpredictable climate.
