Nvidia and Amazon: Billions Invested in Energy for AI

Amazon and Nvidia need more energy for AI. Nvidia is investing up to $3 billion in Lancium, the energy infrastructure developer behind OpenAI and Oracle's data center in Texas, according to The Information. A $2 billion stake would give Nvidia about 20% of the company, which is valued at around $10 billion. Lancium already has four gigawatts of energy contracted in Texas and is developing sites for up to 15 additional gigawatts.

On its part, Amazon is backing a massive gas power plant in Pecos County, Texas. This facility could emit up to 33 million tons of CO₂ per year, according to the New York Times, making it the most polluting power plant in the country. Its 35 gas turbines are designed to generate up to 7.65 gigawatts of electricity for an Amazon data center. Amazon spokesperson Margaret Callahan stated that the company's climate goals remain, but acknowledged that data centers for AI could make achieving them more difficult. Environmental groups are sounding the alarm about health risks and pollution.

Climatologist Zeke Hausfather estimates that a heavy user of agentic AI consumes roughly as much energy per year as a clothes dryer, and this figure is on the rise.
