Nvidia Threatened: Microsoft and Anthropic Eye AMD for AI
Nvidia's dominance in AI chips is weakening as Microsoft turns to AMD and Anthropic may follow suit.
Microsoft plans to use more AMD AI chips in its Azure cloud. This expanded partnership relies on AMD's new Helios platform, which is expected to launch in the second half of 2026. Helios is designed to run large AI models and provide Azure customers with an alternative to Nvidia's dominant GPU systems. AMD's CEO, Lisa Su, described this partnership as a major milestone. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that customers need more choices in AI infrastructure.
Nvidia still retains considerable pricing power, but it faces increasing competition from AMD and custom TPUs manufactured by other companies.
AMD may also attract another major client. A public GitHub profile belonging to an AMD director suggests that Anthropic, the company behind Claude, is testing AMD hardware. According to SemiAnalysis, AMD has assigned Anthropic its highest priority rating, placing it on par with major clients such as Meta. Anthropic is still in the testing phase of the hardware. AMD could confirm this partnership at its upcoming "Advancing AI" conference if its engineering team resolves remaining concerns regarding software quality. OpenAI also has a partnership with AMD.
