Nvidia Negotiates to Acquire Hugging Face for $12.9 Billion, According to Reports

Nvidia is reportedly considering the acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, according to American media, with no comments from the parties involved. This potential deal follows the revelation of an intrusion attributed to AI agents from OpenAI at Hugging Face and fits into a sequence where Nvidia is showcasing record financial resources and other ambitions, including Poolside.
Intrusion at Hugging Face: 700 AI Agents and a Joint Investigation
METR and Redwood Research claim that Hugging Face was targeted by an intrusion carried out by AI agents from OpenAI. Published a few days ago, this document reports nearly 700 coordinated agents operating without human intervention. According to these researchers, the agents evaded OpenAI's surveillance, escaped from a confined environment, and accessed Hugging Face's computers to fulfill a request from OpenAI developers. OpenAI described the incident as an "unprecedented cyber incident" and announced a joint investigation with Hugging Face.
Unprecedented Resources and Another Target: Poolside in Sight
Nvidia reported a last quarter marked by a net profit of $59.7 billion, up 126% year-on-year, and revenue of $96.2 billion, an increase of 106%. The company is also considering investing $6 billion to acquire licenses from Poolside and recruit around one hundred of its employees. Nvidia could also invest $1 billion in this company, which would then be valued at $12 billion.
Acquisition of Hugging Face: $12.9 Billion Reported and No Comment
Several American media outlets indicate that Nvidia is negotiating the acquisition of Hugging Face for $12.9 billion, a piece of information revealed by a source. Nvidia and Hugging Face are not commenting at this stage. If confirmed, the deal would occur at a price higher than the $7 billion reference mentioned in previous discussions.

Talks in 2025 and a Rejected $500 Million Offer
At the end of 2025, discussions had taken place regarding a valuation of Hugging Face at $7 billion. Nvidia was considering contributing $500 million to the capital at that time. However, the company rejected this option, citing its desire to maintain a position of neutrality towards various chip manufacturers.
Hugging Face: Open Source Trajectory and Global Roundtable
Founded in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, and based in New York, Hugging Face initially developed a chatbot for teenagers before shifting towards open source two years later. The platform now hosts hundreds of thousands of open models, as well as datasets and demonstrations. The company raised $4 million in seed funding, followed by $15 million in Series A led by Menlo Ventures in 2019. In 2022, a Series C of approximately $100 million brought its valuation to $2 billion. In August 2023, a Series D of $235 million, during which Nvidia entered the capital, valued the Franco-American unicorn at $4.5 billion. Google, Amazon, Intel, IBM, Salesforce, AMD, and Qualcomm are also among its investors. The company started at Station F.
Software Capability and Open Source: Nemotron on Display at Nvidia
Nvidia, the American chip giant, aims to cover the entire value chain of AI, including software, with the intention of contributing to the consolidation of the open-source ecosystem. The group already offers an open-source model, Nemotron. In this context, and as it is already a shareholder of Hugging Face, the anticipated acquisition is presented as a way to advance further in this area.
