Nvidia Introduces PAIR to Share AI Power at Home

Nvidia introduces PAIR, an open-source and free software that connects home computers to perform local AI inference. The beta version, available on Windows, Linux, and macOS, comes with encrypted security mechanisms and an ecosystem of agents that need to be streamlined for configuration on Windows. The company targets households that are already equipped, where unused power can be pooled.
Available in beta with a secure channel and planned agent apps
The beta version of PAIR is available today and supports Windows, Linux, and macOS. Nvidia specifies that devices are paired via a six-digit code, and then communication is secured by mTLS, ensuring encrypted and mutually authenticated exchanges between computers. At the same time, Nvidia announces that Perplexity Portable Computer, Hermes Agent, and OpenClaw will offer simplified local configuration with Nvidia GPUs on Windows. These new experiences aim to launch local agents in just a few clicks, reducing the initial manual setup.
Targeted hardware and software integrations for local AI
PAIR primarily works with Nvidia GeForce GPUs starting from the RTX 20 series, RTX Pro GPUs, DGX Spark systems, as well as Apple M4 chips or newer. Seth Schneider, product manager at Nvidia, indicates that most PAIR users are likely to have a MacBook or Windows laptop and a gaming PC. This free software synchronizes home computers for local AI inference without requiring a hardware router. Distributed as open-source, it detects and connects compatible machines on the network and integrates with tools like Ollama and LM Studio.

Utilizing PC inactivity and distributing calculations in parallel
PAIR leverages home computers when they are idle to avoid interfering with other ongoing tasks. Connected machines can process computational requests in parallel, which, according to Nvidia, is suitable for agent workflows that break down complex tasks into subtasks. This approach aims to prevent bottlenecks on a single GPU. Nvidia also notes that PAIR automatically adjusts to the arrival or departure of devices from the network, including if a user starts gaming on their PC.
Extreme scenario cited and estimation of 165 teraflops of unused capacity
Seth Schneider cites the example of a family where the father has an Nvidia RTX Spark laptop and a DGX Spark workstation, the mother has an RTX 5090 laptop, the daughter has a gaming PC, and the son has a MacBook Pro. In this scenario, he estimates nearly 165 teraflops of unused computing capacity. He refers to a "treasure of free tokens" present in households, even after considering the electricity bill of an average American household.
