Nvidia Supports Safe Superintelligence by Ilya Sutskever, Sidelines Google
Nvidia is investing what it describes as a "substantial" amount in Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI lab led by Ilya Sutskever, former chief scientist at OpenAI. The two companies announced the deal on Monday, without disclosing the exact amount.
As part of a long-term partnership, SSI will have access to Nvidia's next-generation GPU platform Vera Rubin, which, according to the companies, will increase its computing capacity by a factor of ten. Until now, the lab had primarily relied on Google's TPU chips, according to the Wall Street Journal. This agreement also helps Nvidia to sideline Google as a competing chip supplier during the current AI boom.
Sutskever stated that the research focuses on the neglected aspects of how the human brain operates. SSI was founded in 2024 with a singular goal: a direct race toward safe superintelligence. The company has raised approximately $2 billion from Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, DST Global, and Greenoaks, and was recently valued at around $30 billion.
