Ollie Achieves SOC 2 and Promises Not to Share Your Data

The personal assistant Ollie focuses on privacy with SOC 2 compliance and a subscription model. Its CEO, Bill Lennon, claims not to share any data and is preparing secure tokenization to facilitate usage. The service operates in a saturated market, facing ultra-funded players like Instinct, while acknowledging the inherent uncertainties of LLMs.
Reliability: Outages, LLM Limitations, and Uncertain Adoption
Ollie recently experienced an infrastructure outage with its text provider, rendering it inoperative during a test. Bill Lennon, its CEO, emphasizes that language models are stochastic and therefore intrinsically unreliable. He explains his intention to build a "defensive agent harness" to intercept and prevent failures, mentioning "1,000 cuts" to prioritize resolving. The adoption of this type of assistant remains uncertain, although Lennon is optimistic and indicates that Ollie's retention curves are comparable to those of leading AI subscriptions in terms of paying subscribers. However, he did not disclose any user or subscriber figures, citing strong competition. Additionally, a test of Instinct provided inaccurate hotel rates during a booking.
Privacy: SOC 2 Compliance and Data Commitment
Ollie is among the first family-oriented public AI assistants to achieve SOC 2 compliance, an independent audit that validates formal security and data protection controls. The team views this milestone as a strong signal indicating that Ollie does not collect personal data for other purposes, such as training AI models. Bill Lennon highlights a subscription model to show that Ollie acts in the user's interest and asserts that data is not shared with anyone.

Access to Services: Cloud Browser and Security
Beyond SOC 2 compliance, Ollie does not require usernames or passwords to function. When a connection to a third-party site is necessary, the assistant uses its own cloud browser and provides the user with a link to a remote session, including for payments and purchases. However, this method means that the user may sometimes need to reconnect, which Bill Lennon considers temporary. He plans to implement secure tokenization to avoid the need for re-entering information and seeks to balance convenience and trust. Access to more sensitive data, such as bank accounts via a connector like Plaid, will first require building user trust.
Current Features and Planned Developments
Positioned as a family assistant for daily life, Ollie integrates with users' messaging. It synchronizes calendars and emails to manage schedules and relay information to each family member. Features are available to organize meals, make purchases, monitor tasks, schedule appointments, and pay bills within group conversations. In the future, the team plans to integrate tools for managing household budgets.
A Competitive and Well-Funded Market
Ollie competes with other text-based assistants like Poke (acquired by Cognition), Fambot, Ohai, Folk, Saner.ai, and Tomo. Other solutions target work, calendar management, and emails, such as Town, Lindy, and Reclaim.ai. Instinct raised $350 million at a valuation of $2.5 billion even before its launch. Ollie, based in San Diego, has raised $7.5 million in seed funding, primarily from Khosla Ventures and AI House. Instinct has been criticized for broad terms of service and a privacy policy that grants a perpetual and irrevocable license on user content, including for training its AI models.
The Founder: AI and Fintech Experience
Bill Lennon holds a Ph.D. in AI and has experience in fintech. He sold his startup Groundwork, a neobank for NGOs, in 2021. This experience could be an asset if Ollie expands into financial management.
