OpenAI Faces Losses Despite Record Revenues
OpenAI reported an adjusted operating margin of -122% in the first quarter of 2026. This means that for every dollar earned, the company lost $1.22, even excluding items such as stock-based compensation.
OpenAI's total revenue reached approximately $5.7 billion, surpassing its competitor Anthropic by about one billion dollars, according to The Information. This growth was primarily driven by the coding agent Codex, enterprise sales, and early advertising tests integrated into ChatGPT. However, ChatGPT did not meet its goal of one billion weekly users, stabilizing at 905 million.
Anthropic Narrows the Gap
On its part, Anthropic appears to be quickly closing the gap with OpenAI. Its annualized revenue is estimated at nearly $45 billion, compared to about $30 billion for OpenAI. For the second quarter, Anthropic expects revenue of nearly $11 billion and an operating profit of almost $600 million.
Both companies are considering potential IPOs as early as the fourth quarter, which could reshape the competitive landscape in the artificial intelligence sector.
