Anthropic Surpasses OpenAI in Enterprise AI Adoption

According to the latest AI Index report from Ramp, Anthropic has taken the lead in the enterprise AI sector, surpassing OpenAI. This shift in leadership is attributed to the growing adoption of Claude Code by businesses.

A Significant Turning Point for Anthropic

For the first time, corporate spending on Anthropic has exceeded that on OpenAI. In April, Anthropic reached 34.4% adoption in the enterprise sector, compared to 32.3% for OpenAI. This turnaround is notable in a market where OpenAI was once the undisputed leader.

Anthropic's milestone marks one of the most significant changes in the era of generative AI. Ramp, which facilitates invoice payments for businesses, analyzes transactions from over 50,000 U.S. companies. While the index does not capture all AI spending, it is widely used to track market trends.

The Rapid Rise of Anthropic

Anthropic has gained traction with enterprise clients throughout the past year. The end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 saw massive adoption of Claude Code, particularly in software development. Anthropic is now looking to extend this success to other sectors such as legal operations and finance.

In January, Ramp's data showed that OpenAI was far ahead of its competitors, with a significant rise in adoption in software development, research, finance, and customer support.

A Constantly Evolving Market

Despite this success, Ramp economist Ara Kharazian emphasizes that competition remains fierce and the AI market is extremely volatile. Companies can quickly change models based on various factors, such as cost, performance, and reliability. Rising token costs, computing shortages, and interest in cheaper open-source solutions could also influence the market.

Kharazian stated, “We have never seen a software industry this dynamic, where newcomers can disrupt market leaders in a matter of months. Therefore, these results should not be interpreted as an indication that Anthropic is the definitive leader in commercial adoption.”

The pace of development outstrips the usual vendor loyalty forces, making the market particularly unpredictable.
