OpenAI Abandons Atlas and Merges Its Functions into ChatGPT
OpenAI is discontinuing its browser Atlas, launched in October 2025, after just eight months of existence. Its features will be integrated into an updated Chrome extension, allowing users to run ChatGPT directly in the Chrome sidebar. The company states that it is incorporating lessons learned from Atlas and user feedback. Atlas users will be informed of this change.
Additionally, the new desktop feature "Computer Usage" enables ChatGPT to manage tasks in the background. It can click, type, move files, and work across applications and browsers, whether for a one-time action or a recurring task.
When Atlas was launched, it seemed to be an alternative to Chrome. Today, OpenAI has decided to abandon it less than eight months later. This adds the browser to a growing list of OpenAI products that have been discontinued or underperformed, alongside plugins, apps, the ChatGPT Agent, and the video model Sora. For users, consolidating all these features into ChatGPT could actually be more convenient. However, it also means that OpenAI has no way to divert users from Chrome, thus giving Google a competitive edge with all the browsing data it collects.
