OpenAI Refocuses on Coding and Professional Clients
OpenAI has decided to modify its strategy by abandoning its spread across multiple product lines to concentrate on coding tools and professional clients. This new direction was announced by Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications, during a company-wide meeting attended by Sam Altman and Mark Chen, head of research. They assessed which initiatives to scale back in order to refocus the company's efforts.
This strategic shift is a direct response to the growing dominance of Anthropic in the enterprise AI market. Anthropic's Claude Code and Cowork products have made it the preferred provider for many companies. OpenAI believes that its previous strategy of launching numerous products simultaneously left the company vulnerable to its competitors.
A Major Strategic Change
According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI is preparing for a significant shift in direction. Instead of spreading its resources across many fronts, the company plans to focus on two main areas: coding tools and professional clients. Fidji Simo detailed these plans during the meeting, and Sam Altman along with Mark Chen are actively working to identify areas to reduce. Employees will be informed of specific changes in the coming weeks.
Simo emphasized the importance of not getting distracted by secondary projects, insisting on the need to improve productivity, particularly in commercial terms. "We cannot miss this moment because we are distracted by side quests," she told employees.
The Costs of Distraction
Last year, OpenAI announced a multitude of new products, including the Sora video generator, the Atlas web browser, a hardware device designed with Jony Ive, and e-commerce features for ChatGPT. At the time, Sam Altman compared this approach to "betting on a series of startups" within OpenAI.
However, current and former employees have described a situation of lack of focus, with a strategic direction that was sometimes difficult to follow. Computing resources, a rare asset in any cutting-edge lab, were often redistributed among teams on a short-term basis. The organizational structure had also become increasingly confusing. For example, the Sora team, while significant, was placed under the research department.
Sora itself illustrates the problem. The standalone app, launched in September with an interface similar to TikTok, briefly reached the top of Apple's App Store. After that, usage plummeted. OpenAI now plans to integrate video generation into the main ChatGPT app.
OpenAI also launched an agent mode last year, essentially a browser use case, which reportedly lost most of its users because no one really knew what it was for.
Anthropic's Targeted Bet on Coding Pays Off
According to the WSJ, the immediate trigger for this realignment is the rise of Anthropic. This competitor has become a fast AI provider for enterprises, largely due to the viral success of its Claude Code and Cowork products. Anthropic has placed far fewer product bets than OpenAI, systematically focusing on the enterprise and coding market. The company has deliberately steered clear of audio, image, and video generation so far.
Simo described Anthropic's success to employees as a "wake-up call." The company "is clearly acting as if this is an emergency situation," she said, while adding that "declaring emergencies for everything makes a lot of sense."
Strategic Partnerships for the Frontier Platform
As part of this new direction, OpenAI recently announced strategic partnerships to promote its new enterprise agent platform, "Frontier," to a broader audience. The company is collaborating with private equity and consulting firms to help businesses better integrate technology into their real workflows. This initiative aims to strengthen OpenAI's presence in the professional sector and offer more targeted and effective solutions.
