OpenAI Strengthens Codex with the Acquisition of Ona
OpenAI recently announced the acquisition of Ona, a German startup founded in 2020 and formerly known as Gitpod. Specializing in AI agents and secure cloud development environments, Ona will enable OpenAI to enhance its Codex product. This acquisition aims to provide persistent, client-controlled work environments for developers.
Codex, which is experiencing growing usage with over 5 million weekly users—an increase of 400% since the beginning of the year—will benefit from this integration. Thanks to Ona, Codex will now be able to execute tasks over several hours or days, even when the user's computer is idle. AI agents will operate in each company's dedicated cloud, with OpenAI providing the necessary models and orchestration.
Increased Competition with Anthropic
This acquisition is part of a strategy to compete with Anthropic, whose product Claude Code is currently leading in long-duration coding tasks. Back in March, OpenAI had already integrated the Python tools uv and Ruff into its Codex ecosystem through the purchase of Astral. Additionally, both OpenAI and Anthropic are exploring the possibility of an initial public offering, marking a new phase in their development.
Ona's CEO, Johannes Landgraf, emphasized the importance of a "trusted workplace" for AI agents, beyond their mere intelligence. However, the acquisition of Ona is subject to regulatory approvals before it can be finalized.
