OpenAI recently acquired the startup Weights.gg, specializing in voice cloning, according to information revealed by the New York Times. This operation, which took place discreetly earlier this year, did not disclose its financial details. Weights.gg had made a name for itself with its tools that replicate the voices of celebrities such as Samuel L. Jackson, Taylor Swift, and Donald Trump.
The startup, which operated as a social network for creating and sharing AI algorithms, had around six employees and had managed to raise nearly four million dollars in venture capital. On April 1, 2026, Weights.gg officially shut down, sending a farewell message to its community on its website. Since then, its former employees have joined various teams within OpenAI.
Despite this acquisition, OpenAI does not plan to relaunch a product similar to that of Weights.gg. In 2024, OpenAI had already developed its own voice cloning technology but chose to keep it confidential due to security concerns. Currently, OpenAI is integrating its advancements in voice technology into other products, such as the voice mode of ChatGPT and an API for developers.
