OpenAI Aims to Acquire Pierre, Creator of Code Storage

OpenAI announces its intention to acquire Pierre Computer Company, known for Code Storage and its open-source libraries. The operation, subject to approvals, comes with guarantees of continuity for customers and a gradual integration into Codex to adapt Git workflows for human teams and agents.
The operation remains conditional and tool continuity is announced
The finalization of the proposed acquisition depends on customary closing conditions, including obtaining regulatory approvals. Until the closing, OpenAI and Pierre will continue to operate as distinct and independent companies. OpenAI states that Pierre's open-source projects will remain accessible under an open-source license and that the company will continue its contributions. Customers will be able to continue using Code Storage after the acquisition is finalized, while its features will be gradually integrated into Codex.
Pierre's technical components already used in Codex
The Trees and Diffs libraries developed by Pierre are already integrated into Codex, where they serve for file navigation and code change visualization. According to OpenAI, these tools facilitate the review and navigation of large volumes of code while maintaining good performance. The Edit mode of Diffs allows a reviewer to correct a line of code directly at the identified location. Pierre has also launched Highlights, a very fast syntax highlighter that updates in real-time as code is typed or streamed by an agent. The Pierre team also designed the Code Storage API, a service that allows for code storage and tracking its history using Git.

Goal: Evolve Git and position Codex at the center
OpenAI believes that systems around Git need to evolve as engineering work becomes increasingly parallel. Earlier this week, the company introduced Pando, its internal version control backend designed for engineers and agents. With the Pierre team, OpenAI plans to adapt Git workflows for interactions with coding agents and aims to establish a new standard for software development, from the creation of the first branch by an agent to the deployment of code. The goal is to make Codex the platform where developers and agents realize their most ambitious projects, launch new products and platforms, and advance version control in the industry. OpenAI also wants Codex to connect the code deployed by a company to the decisions made by its employees, at the scale required by future developments.
