OpenAI: Altman Claims AI Creates More Jobs
OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, now states that AI could create more jobs than it eliminates. Altman wrote that he is "pretty sure" that AI has been a job creator so far. "This is not what I expected," he added, having previously warned that the impact could occur so quickly that it is "potentially a bit scary." The CEO of Anthropic, Dario Amodei, has also revised his earlier statements, now describing automation as a productivity multiplier rather than a job destroyer. He had previously claimed that AI would take over large parts of entry-level office jobs in a very short time, a statement that garnered attention but little sympathy.
From Job Apocalypse to Job Engine
No study to date shows a significant impact of AI on overall measured productivity or on the labor market. A recent study conducted by several universities found that the job crisis among programmers and writers began in early 2022, several months before the launch of ChatGPT. The Yale Budget Lab also found no changes in the job market related to AI.
However, AI-related layoffs have still occurred. In some cases, money intended for workers has been redirected towards AI-dedicated hardware. In others, companies needed an excuse that would be well-received by shareholders.
