OpenAI partners with Synopsys to develop GPT-Synopsys, an AI model aimed at chip design and verification. This project includes the direct integration of Synopsys's EDA tools, trials with industry clients, joint commercialization, and guarantees regarding data management.
Clear Ambitions and Established Hardware Context
Sassine Ghazi, CEO of Synopsys, believes that artificial intelligence could significantly accelerate chip design. Greg Brockman, co-founder of OpenAI, views this partnership as an opportunity to enhance both chips and AI models. Additionally, OpenAI is already collaborating with Broadcom on chips designed to run AI models. The recently unveiled Jalapeno chip is considered highly competitive compared to other specialized chips.
Hosting at OpenAI, Ongoing Testing, and Revenue Sharing
The GPT-Synopsys model will be hosted on OpenAI's infrastructure. Preliminary tests are underway with clients in the semiconductor industry. OpenAI and Synopsys plan to jointly market the product and share the revenue. Both companies specify that client data will not be used to train the model and will be stored in an encrypted manner.
An AI Model Coupled with Synopsys's EDA Tools
Synopsys develops electronic design automation tools used by engineers to create chips and semiconductors. GPT-Synopsys aims to combine these tools with OpenAI's AI technology, for which OpenAI holds a license for Synopsys's EDA software. The goal is to develop a model capable of reasoning about chip design and verification, and to directly utilize Synopsys's tools. Engineers will be able to assign design objectives to the model, then review and validate the results. This project is part of a multi-year strategic partnership between OpenAI and Synopsys to develop this specialized model.
