OpenAI and Anthropic: The API Token Battle Intensifies
OpenAI is considering reducing the prices of its API tokens in an effort to attract customers from Anthropic, according to information from the Wall Street Journal. This strategy could prompt Anthropic to respond in kind. At a recent event, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, emphasized that the costs associated with using AI agents had become "a huge problem" for businesses.
Claude Code: Anthropic's Success
Anthropic has recently seen its coding tool, Claude Code, gain popularity among developers. This surge has allowed the startup to surpass OpenAI in terms of valuation for the first time. With the increased use of AI agents in tools like Claude Code, usage costs have also risen. These costs, once covered by fixed-rate subscriptions, are now billed based on actual usage. Thus, an AI workload that previously cost $200 per month can now reach several thousand, or even tens of thousands of dollars.
Financial Consequences and IPO Plans
This price war between OpenAI and Anthropic could exacerbate the already significant financial losses of both companies, which amount to billions. OpenAI has recently confidentially filed documents for an IPO, although it is not expected before 2027. Meanwhile, Anthropic has also filed its documents and plans to go public later this year.
