OpenAI Unveils GPT-5.5, a Leap Forward for Agentic AI
On April 23, 2026, OpenAI lifted the veil on GPT-5.5, its most advanced artificial intelligence model to date. Less than two months after the launch of GPT-5.4, this new version stands out for its enhanced intelligence and intuition. This announcement comes shortly after the launch of Claude Opus 4.7 by Anthropic, highlighting the fierce competition between the two AI giants.
Towards Increased Autonomy in Complex Tasks
With GPT-5.5, OpenAI aims to advance AI autonomy in managing complex tasks. The model is designed to autonomously execute "multi-step" tasks, including planning, tool usage, work verification, navigating ambiguity, and perseverance. These improvements focus on four key areas:
- Agentic coding: writing, debugging, and refactoring within large codebases.
- Computer usage: interactions such as clicks, inputs, and navigation between interfaces.
- Office work: drafting, data analysis, document and spreadsheet production.
- Scientific research: with an emphasis on biology and mathematics.
OpenAI also highlights improved efficiency in terms of tokens, allowing GPT-5.5 to solve the same tasks as GPT-5.4 with fewer resources while maintaining similar latency. In terms of cybersecurity, the model is rated "High" in OpenAI's Preparedness Framework, with enhanced safeguards and expanded access for cybersecurity professionals through the Trusted Access for Cyber program.
Availability and Increased Competition
The GPT-5.5 model is already accessible to users on the Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans of ChatGPT and Codex. A more advanced version, GPT-5.5 Pro, is reserved for users on the Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. Deployment in the API is expected "very soon."
This release occurs amid intense competition with Anthropic, whose Claude Opus 4.7 model has dominated rankings for several months. In April 2026, the LMArena ranking placed Anthropic's Claude models at the top, relegating OpenAI to ninth place. Since the beginning of the year, OpenAI has ramped up its launches, with GPT-5.4 in March, followed by its mini and nano variants, and then GPT-5.4-Cyber before this latest update. Cybersecurity has become a new battleground between the two companies, especially following the launch of the Claude Mythos Preview model by Anthropic.
