Two years ago, in the field of image generation, ChatGPT lagged behind its competitors, notably Midjourney, which was then the benchmark for artistic renderings. However, the situation has changed dramatically. Today, while OpenAI's large language models are losing ground to competitors like Claude or Gemini in several categories, the California-based firm has established itself as the undisputed leader in the image generation sector. This trend is confirmed by the June ranking of the Text-to-Image Arena, established by Artificial Analysis based on user votes.

The Leaders of the June 2026 Ranking

OpenAI occupies the top two spots in the ranking with its models GPT Image 2 and GPT Image 1.5. Google, for its part, maintains its position in fourth place with Nano Banana 2. However, this month's ranking is marked by the emergence of new players. HiDream, which was in tenth place in May with its model Dev-2604, has made a significant leap forward with an improved version, HiDream-O1-Image-1.5, reaching third place, tied with GPT Image 1.5. This startup, whose models are available as open source, is establishing itself as a serious contender in this ranking.

NVIDIA made a notable entry in fifth position with Cosmos3-Super-Text2Image-agentic, a variant specialized in image generation from the omnimodal model Cosmos 3, released as open source at the end of May. Krea, a company previously less visible in this ranking, climbed to seventh place with Krea 2 Medium. Recraft, which had re-entered the top 10 last month, maintains two of its models in the top half of the table, in eighth and tenth positions.

The Absentees and Disappointments

In contrast, companies like ByteDance, Microsoft, and xAI, which were in the May ranking, are no longer present in the top ten. Midjourney, once the reference in the sector, has plummeted dramatically, now sitting at 79th place in the ranking.

The Text-to-Image Arena was launched several months ago with the goal of objectively evaluating image generation technologies. This ranking is based on a duel system where users compare two results produced by anonymized models and choose the one that best meets the request. These confrontations feed into an Elo score, which evolves over time. Defeating a theoretically stronger opponent earns points, while losing to a weaker model results in a loss of points. According to Artificial Analysis, the ranking is updated every hour.
