A Historic Fundraising Round for OpenAI
OpenAI has recently completed an impressive fundraising round of $122 billion, bringing its valuation to $852 billion. This financing round is the largest ever conducted by the company, which is preparing to go public this year.
The funding aims to strengthen OpenAI's financial capabilities, particularly for the acquisition of AI chips, the expansion of its data centers, and talent recruitment. Key investors include SoftBank, Andreessen Horowitz, D.E. Shaw Ventures, MGX, TPG, and T. Rowe Price Associates, with notable participation from Amazon, Nvidia, and Microsoft.
Participation from Individual Investors
Approximately $3 billion of this funding comes from individual investors through banking channels. Additionally, OpenAI will be included in several ETFs managed by ARK Invest, allowing a larger number of people to access the company's shares before its imminent IPO.
OpenAI has also expanded its revolving credit line to about $4.7 billion, backed by several major global banks. This credit line, which has not yet been utilized, provides OpenAI with increased financial flexibility for its computing and infrastructure expenses.
Impressive Growth and Revenue
OpenAI's press release highlights impressive figures: the company generates $2 billion in monthly revenue and has over 900 million weekly active users. It boasts of growing four times faster than giants like Alphabet and Meta.
OpenAI also has more than 50 million subscribers, and its advertising pilot is already generating over $100 million in annual recurring revenue in less than six weeks. The company claims that 40% of its revenue now comes from the business sector, up from 30% the previous year, and it expects to reach parity with the consumer sector by 2026.
Towards an AI Superapp
With its latest model GPT-5.4, OpenAI continues to grow in agentic workflows. The company describes itself as an "AI superapp," aiming to become the primary interface for users to engage with AI.
This massive funding round and these growth figures underscore OpenAI's strategy to position itself as an indispensable leader in the public market, ahead of its IPO.
