OpenAI and Jony Ive: A Revolutionary AI Speaker for 2027
The AI device that OpenAI is developing with former Apple designer Jony Ive is described as "essentially a smart speaker without a screen," battery-powered, doughnut-shaped, and about the size of a hockey puck, according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman.
The device, set to launch in 2027 at a price exceeding $300, is expected to feature a unique design, including moving parts, some of which will move on their own to indicate when the device is responding or interacting with the user. It will also be equipped with lights, a camera system, and other sensors.
Gurman's sources indicate that this "battery-powered" device is designed to be "easy to carry around the house with one hand," similar to Amazon's former Tap speaker. Gurman notes that it will operate similarly to the voice mode of ChatGPT on smartphone apps, but with more advanced models for a more human-like interactivity, while having a very different look and feel from Apple products, despite their ongoing lawsuit.
The pocket-sized speaker/personal assistant could be the first of a "family of devices" that OpenAI has planned, but we should hear much more about them before their arrival.
